ARCHIVO + ARTE / ART + ARCHIVE

Sergio Michael

The Animita (an altar remembering the disappearance or death of a person in the public space) is the object by which Sergio Michael develops his project called “Animitas”. These figures use the language of “the holy” in order to leave a mark on peripheric zones of Santiago de Chile. These are marks of violent events of death remembering subjects related to drug dealing, whose reputations are afterwards put into the field of the religious imaginary.

Michael explores the identity of the subjects, the change of values inside of the population and the lectures we can do of these different layers as sections operating inside of the notion of the archive. These layers are then made transparent through the use of glass and a reflecting apparatus producing a certain kind of analogous 3-D gaze. This is possible transferring images of the animitas to a pristine sculptorical body.
